Authored works for Performance

It’s something of a paradox that as a visual learner I enjoy classic radio plays; I have authored one and plan to write more. I also spent the “Covid years” considering how it changed relationships – and this became a play which explored the impact of pandemic on people, and how performance art changed as well. My main influence when writing plays comes from volunteering at the Vermont Children’s Theater, a free program which makes room for all students without regard to physical or intellectual challenges. It raised my standards on inclusion and reminded me there’s a place for everyone.

Bethlehem:

A radio-style play for live or virtual performance, it tells the story of the Nativity from the perspective of the younger residents. Approximately 40 minutes performance time, actors can be from grade school to adult with parts for a minimum of 10 actors and room for more. For actors of all abilities, with opportunities for sound effects participants and a communicating but non-speaking part.

2020: the Year that Wasn’t:

Exploring the experiences of four groups during pandemic quarantine. A grandparent/child face new settings; a teen home alone when one parent is deployed and another must live at a hospital; coworkers redefine their relationship; students and a teacher struggle to keep learning. Told through emails and Zoom sessions, the play can be staged live or performed entirely online. Two hours performance time; actors grade school to adult. And there are musical numbers – because what’s a play about Covid without singing?
